Dr Matthew McCarten leads the Spatial Finance theme – the integration of geospatial data and analysis into financial theory and practice – at the Oxford Sustainable Finance Programme. His main areas of research include corporate finance, financial regulation and ESG related issues.

Matthew recently submitted his PhD thesis in finance at the University of Otago, New Zealand in 2017. His thesis examined the determinants and consequences of securities class actions. In particular, investigating the association between securities class actions and various corporate characteristics, including debt financing, political lobbying and innovation.

He also holds a MBus (with distinction) and a BCom from the University of Otago. His main areas of research include corporate finance, financial regulation and ESG related issues.
