The Oxford Sustainable Finance Programme (OxSFP) of the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment (SSEE) is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to join the OxSFP Climate and Environmental Analytics Team. The role is associated with the UK Centre for Greening Finance and Investment (CGFI), a national centre, led by the University of Oxford and established to accelerate the adoption and use of climate and environmental data and analytics by financial institutions internationally. The ultimate vision of CGFI is to enable financial institutions to access and use consistent, timely, and appropriate climate and environmental data and analytics for any point on planet earth historically, in the present, and projected into the future, for every major sector, and for the complete spectrum of climate and environmental risks.

The successful candidate will contribute to multiple flagship research projects within CGFI, with a focus on applying climate science, analyses and modelling within financial decision making. This includes for example, attribution of climate extremes, scenario development and developing climate risk assessments and analytics suitable for helping financial institutions to manage physical-climate related risks and align their financing with resilience and adaptation goals. This includes contributing to the development of climate risk analytics for, for example, areas such as climate disclosure, risk management, stress testing and scenario analysis.

You will hold, or be close to completion of, a relevant PhD/DPhil or equivalent research experience in a relevant subject (e.g. atmospheric physics, meteorology or climatology). You will have a strong interest in climate risk analytics and the assessment and management of climate-related financial risks, including an interest in working with financial institutions. The successful applicant will have good scientific programming skills and experience in python, R, Matlab, or equivalent mathematical data analysis languages and be able to propose and develop new mathematical methods and implement them in computer code. The ability to write scientific text and translate scientific findings into everyday language is essential.
