Senior Research Associate in Spatial Finance, Oxford Sustainable Finance Group

Grade 7: £33,309 – £40,927

Closing date: 12:00 noon, Wednesday 3 August 2022

We are seeking to appoint a Senior Research Associate in Spatial Finance to lead our heavy industry research. Reporting to the Head of Transition Finance Research and the Director of OxSFG, and working closely with the Head and Deputy Head of the Spatial Finance Initiative and the Head of Machine Learning and Data Science, the postholder will be responsible for creating novel datasets and carrying out world-leading high impact research.

Aligning the financial system with global sustainability depends on accurate and granular data on the sustainability performance of companies. Asset-level data and insights allow for a bottom-up understanding of a wide range of sustainability risks, impacts and opportunities. At the Oxford Sustainable Finance Group we have pioneered the concept of Spatial Finance, which is the integration of geospatial data into financial decision-making. Asset-level data combined with observed and modelled geospatial insights provide unprecedented levels of transparency across the real economy. This is needed to hold investors, regulators, civil society and corporates to account on their and empower them to take effective action.

The Senior Research Associate will lead project teams working to develop, enhance, and deploy new global asset-level databases for heavy industry sectors (e.g. cement, steel, petrochemicals, aluminium). The postholder will also develop industry specific climate and environmental risk analysis at a global scale, either by adapting existing analytical frameworks (e.g. Carbon Lock-In Curves) or developing new ones. This will involve developing a detailed understanding of these sectors including the material climate and environmental factors they face. The postholder will also be responsible for developing new research and proposals around asset-level data and spatial finance. Finally, the postholder will collaborate with multidisciplinary team members and engage with senior external stakeholders and users.

The OxSFG is situated within Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment (SSEE) – part of the School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE). The OxSFG team is the largest within the SSEE, having rapidly expanded recently. We intend to significantly increase the reach and impact over the next five years.

The successful candidate must hold, or be near to completion of a relevant PhD/DPhil with significant research experience. An appointment at Grade 7: £33,309 – £40,927 p.a. may also be considered for a less experienced candidate (with a Bachelor’s degree minimum requirement and suitable adjustment of responsibilities).

This is a fixed term post for 2 years with the possibility of extension depending on funding.
