Mark Cliffe is an experienced economist and Board Advisor. He is currently Visiting Professor at the London Institute of Banking & Finance and is working on a number of climate and sustainability projects. Based on his experience in banking and consultancy on climate risk and opportunities, he recently co-launched the Real World Climate Scenarios initiative to accelerate the development of fit-for-purpose scenarios for policymakers and business. Mark is well known for his distinctive insights on disruptive change in economics and policy, environment and climate, society and politics, and technology and consumer behaviour. He has long been prominent in the global media.
Mark served as Group Chief Economist and Head of Research at ING Group from 2006 to 2020, having previously led its financial markets research team. He led ING’s global team of 80 client-facing analysts covering macro-economics, market forecasting and scenario planning across multiple international markets. Before joining ING in 1998, Mark was Chief International Economist at HSBC, and before that was Chief Economist at ANZ Merchant Bank and Nomura respectively. He received a Double First in Economics from Christ’s College, Cambridge University.
